Wrong way driver arrested on DUI charges in Tempe

An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman reported that a wrong-way driver got off the highway and wrecked in Tempe early Monday morning before the driver was taken into custody.

21-year-old Cheyenne Wheeler was taken into custody by the cops and according to investigators, preliminary tests showed Wheeler was impaired with a BAC level of .15%, told Bart Graves, a department spokesman.

Around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, dispatchers started receiving calls with reports of a dark sedan travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Loop 101 near McDowell Road, told a DPS spokesman.

According to witnesses who saw the incident happening live, the car continued southbound and exited at Broadway Road.

After sometime, a sedan matching the description of the wrong-way vehicle was involved in a crash at Price Road and Apache Blvd.

The cops approached the accident spot and took Wheeler into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the DPS spokesman said.

No individual sustained injuries in the crash.
