Stolen vehicle recovered at DUI checkpoint

On Saturday night, a truck that was stolen from the State of Washington was found at a Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force checkpoint.

According to CCSO Spokeswoman Carol Capas, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) was participating in the stationary checkpoint when a black colored 2001 Chevrolet Silverado passed through it. Deputies ran the license plate and found that it belonged to a 1969 truck. She said that the Sheriff’s Deputies tried to stop a truck on State Route 90, eastbound near Colonia De Salud. The driver of the truck didn’t stop and turned south on Moson Road but later it stopped on Blaze Way and Pintek Lane because of significant vehicle damage.

The person driving the truck fled but the passenger travelling in the truck was arrested. The passenger was identified as 37-year-old Ellis Jon Mathis. He was taken to the Sheriff’s Office and he told that he was homeless. Capas told that he was booked on an outstanding warrant from Sierra Vista Justice Court on charges of Forgery and Theft with a $5000 bond; an outstanding warrant from Colorado on charges of Crimes Against Persons, with a $50,000 bond, and a new charge of Possession of Marijuana with a $25,000 bond.

Investigators said that the truck had been stolen from Clark County. Capas also said that investigators are still trying to identify and locate the driver of the truck.
