MESA, AZ – The community is still struggling to assist a 3-year-old girl who sustained life-threatening injuries weeks ago in a DUI accident that was caused by a teenager who was driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Saturday, friends and family gathered at Emerald Park in Mesa for a disc golf event to support and assist the family of the victim.

14-year-old Miguel Maldonado was the reason of the accident. The girl was critically injured when the teenager ran a red light at 67th Avenue and Van Buren Street, and collided with the motor vehicle in which Aria was traveling. Apart from her, her mother and her mother’s boyfriend were also in the motor vehicle. All of them sustained injuries in the collision but Arian’s injuries were critical due to which she was rushed to the hospital and her survival was doubtful.

She was discharged from the ICU but due to the surgeries she underwent, she requires time to fully recover.

Aria’s uncle is a member of a disc golfing club and he is thankful that the club assisted the family to pay for the medicals bills. “It just makes me love this sport even more. Just a bunch of people I don’t know helping out my family just because of this one sport, ” said Matt Greyeyes.

Arian’s 11-year-old brother and 8-year-old sister also attended the event which was held to assist their family.

When the 11-year-old brother of Arian saw her critically injured after the collision, he said, “I was just sad. I couldn’t think about anything else”.

Her sister was sad and said, “I started crying really bad, and then every time we left I just didn’t want to go”.

Other than the fundraising event, there is also an account to assist the family to pay for the medical expenses.
